One of the city's first traditional Indonesian cuisines
There are not many places where you can find Indonesian food in Copenhagen, if you compare it to several other Asian cuisines.
Saji is one of the first purely Indonesian restaurants to open. In the cozy and colorful premises on Studiestræde, you can eat spicy street food in the best class. The dishes are powerful in their taste and there is a good selection of starters, main courses and accompanying wine.
If you are going in a group, it is also recommended to share a lot of smaller dishes, so that you can taste a bit of everything.
5 hearts from Politiken's enthusiastic reviewer
It was a bit of a revelation for Politiken's reviewer to visit Saji. Although it seemed surprising at first to be served dishes with almost Christmas flavor notes, it all quickly became a higher unity:
“There were Christmas spices on the succulent braised spareribs. The flavor of cloves was evident, but the association with danish brown Christmas cookies was soon displaced as chili strength and a sweet soy umami augmented the mix of cloves, star anise, cinnamon and ginger and sent our Christmas ball to the tropics.”
Politiken's reviewer were also very impressed by the atmosphere at the venue, especially by the enthusiastic and happy personalities of the hosts.
A common dream came true
The owners behind Saji are Samuel and Jimmy. They are both from the Indonesian island, Sumatra, but met first in 2010 at a cooking school.
Years later their paths crossed again in the restaurant life and slowly a common dream grew among the two friends. The dream took them to Copenhagen where they first gathered experience in several Copenhagen kitchens such as the popular Asian eatery Kiin Kiin.
At the end of 2022, they could finally open the doors to Saji. A restaurant they opened together. If you meet Samuel or Jimmy on your visit, they will talk with great passion about the menu, which is deeply rooted in the food they themselves grew up with.
