Classic smørrebrød with purpose and precision
At Restaurant 1899, traditional Danish smørrebrød is elevated to new heights with fresh ingredients, freshly baked bread from Gilleleje Harbour, and a love for even the smallest details.
Everything is made from scratch in the kitchen - from hand-peeled shrimp and marinated forest berries to homemade infused aquavit and old-fashioned apple cake.
History on the plate and in the workplace
The restaurant is named after the year 1899 - the year of the so-called September Agreement, which laid the foundation for the Danish labor model and fair working conditions. That spirit is alive and well here. Tables are set with care, dishes are served with pride, and you're met with genuine smiles.
Owners Sinem and Rune Dybvad Demir have created a place where quality and job satisfaction go hand in hand and you can feel it.
A dining experience where everything comes together
Lunch is the heart of the experience, but it’s the complete atmosphere that makes it special: cold beer - both classics and local brews - a curated wine list, homemade aquavit, and a setting that makes you want to linger.
The warm hospitality and great experiences are reflected in a 4.8 out of 5 Google rating. Among the many glowing reviews are comments like:

“Everything comes together here. There’s atmosphere. There’s beauty. And there’s genuine care behind it all. The food was outstanding. We left this stylish restaurant full of love and completely satisfied.”
