The Latin Quarter’s cheeky new kid

On the corner of Mejlgade and Sankt Olufs Gade, in Aarhus’ charming Latin Quarter, you’ll find Lakaj - a Bistro & Cocktail Bar once described by Spiseguiden Aarhus as “the cheeky new kid in class.”

The vibe is casual and informal, with a social buzz that flows from the bar to the tables. The interior is raw and playful, with a wave-shaped terrazzo bar and even a tree planted right in the middle of the room. The open kitchen invites you inside the chefs’ creative process.

Surprises and personal touches

Owner and head chef, Troels Buus Thomsen, explains: “We want to remove the formality from restaurant visits and create space for both the spontaneous and the planners. People should feel free to be surprised.”

That mindset is reflected in the menu, where Lakaj combines global inspiration with iconic bistro classics and personal interpretations. For example, the classic confit de canard is served as a homemade spring roll with bread and Asian garnish - a playful twist on the Danish hotdog.

Unique flavour experiences in Aarhus

With a combination of global flavours and local ingredients, Lakaj is a refreshing addition to the city’s culinary scene - a place where food and drinks go hand in hand, carefully curated and perfectly balanced.

Spiseguiden Aarhus highlights that “The kitchen has a style of its own, and several of the dishes can’t be found anywhere else in Aarhus. At Lakaj, you’re challenged in the best way – without ever compromising the experience.”
